The chemical used in making the popular fabric protector Scotchgard will be discontinued completely by 2002 declared the manufacturer 3M Corp. The compound perfluoro-octanyl sulfonate has been found in the blood of humans and animals. It is likely that the fluorochemicals last forever.

Leading to lead: conflicting rules may put lead in tap water
Article Abstract:
High level of lead in the drinking water is being reported in Washington, D.C. Modified disinfection methods might have changed the chemistry of drinking water making it more likely to dissolve lead-encasing minerals in pipes.

Keeping C[O.sub.2] down: The first U.S. project for carbon dioxide burial gives mixed results
Article Abstract:
The first US project for storing carbon dioxide underground at the geologic site, called the Frio Formation in Texas, has provided mixed results. The Frio data describes about how C[O.sub.2] moves through a formation and it can help in evaluating other sites in order to implement carbon storage across a large variety of sites.
